UNIVERSAL PLANS `SLIMY' ATTRACTION : `TOTALLY NICKELODEON' SET FOR MARCH DEBUT.

Byline: Dave McNary Daily News Staff Writer

Universal Studios Hollywood announced plans Monday to add a 1,200-seat ``Totally Nickelodeon'' theater attraction, including a specially built Sliminator to spew hundreds of gallons of green slime Green slime may refer to:
  • Green slime (Dungeons & Dragons), a category of monster in the Dungeons and Dragons fantasy role-playing game
  • Green slime (You Can't Do That on Television), "I don't know"

 on volunteers.

``It's really going to be a mess,'' said Stephen Carley, president of the theme park. Each show will involve audience members being chosen to go on stage for the purpose of being part of teams that are splattered splat·ter

``The introduction of `Totally Nickelodeon' is consistent with Universal Studios Hollywood's hands-on interactive approach to family entertainment,'' Carley said.

The project, currently under construction on the site of the recently closed ``Flintstones'' theater attraction, is due to open in late March with the goal of attracting children who support Nickelodeon shows such as ``Hey Arnold,'' ``What Would You Do?'' ``Rugrats,'' ``Nickelodeon Guts'' and ``Family Double Dare This article refers to the children's game show. .''

``Totally Nickelodeon'' will offer 45-minute shows with games and stunts from the cable programs. The audience and volunteers will choose the specific rules for each game.

Universal spokesman Eliot Sekular said the decision to go ahead with the project was based on the success of tours of Nickelodeon production facilities at Universal Studios Florida in Orlando.

``Clearly, this concept has been market-tested for several years,'' Sekular said. ``It's part of our trend away from passive attractions and into immersive ones for participants.''

Sekular also said there will be no shortage of volunteers to participate in being splattered with food and slime.

``The kids on the Florida tour will do anything to get slimed,'' he said.

Universal ran ``The Flintstones'' attraction for more than two years, starting with the opening of the movie in May 1994. Since then, it has opened ``Waterworld - A Sea War Spectacular'' and ``Jurassic Park - The Ride.''

``Theme parks need to keep new attractions coming on line in order to keep local people coming,'' said Jack Kyser, an economist with the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Economic Development Corp.
