UNITED TECHNOLOGIES AUTOMOTIVE OPENS THE DOOR FOR 1994 RIGHT-HAND-DRIVE FORD PROBE

DEARBORN, Mich., Oct. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- When right-hand-drive versions of the popular Ford Probe arrive in Japan and the United Kingdom in early 1994 from the United States, they will feature interior door panels from United Technologies Automotive (UTA).
AutoAlliance International, the Ford (NYSE: F) and Mazda joint venture that manufactures the Probe, selected UTA to produce the door panels. Beginning in November 1993, UTA will make 2,500 driver and passenger door panels per month over a four-year span. UTA will deliver the panels to the AutoAlliance plant in Flat Rock, Mich., for final assembly and installation into the vehicles.
UTA also produces door panels for the Mazda 626 and MX6 built at the AutoAlliance plant. This is the company's first door panel assignment for the Ford Probe.
The door panels are in two parts, with upper and lower frames. The upper section is injection-molded ABS substrate covered with a vacuum- formed composite surface material. The lower section is an injection- molded ABS panel with a grain textured surface. The lower panel includes a map pocket with carpeting, a stereo speaker grille and a pull cup for the door handle. The panels' black and opal colors will match the Probe's interior. The electromechanical controls for the doors' power windows and locks will be installed at the Flat Rock plant.
This contract is the latest step in an ongoing relationship between United Technologies and the AutoAlliance partners. UTA began producing door panels for the Mazda 626 and MX6 models in 1989.
