UNITED TECHNOLOGIES, PERM MOTORS, AVIADVIGATEL AGREE ON BASIC PRINCIPLES

PARIS, June 14 /PRNewswire/ -- United Technologies (NYSE: UTX) of the United States and Joint Stock Companies, Perm Motors and Aviadvigatel, of the Russian Federation have agreed on Basic Principles of Cooperation aiming at the creation of a new joint company, Pratt & Whitney/Perm Motors Ltd., to develop commercial aircraft engines and industrial gas turbines.
The partnership's first effort will be development with Pratt & Whitney of an advanced version of the current PS-90A engine designed by Aviadvigatel and built at Perm.
The partners will offer this new engine, called the PS-90P, to aircraft companies for installation on passenger and cargo aircraft. In addition, the partners are considering future cooperation in industrial gas turbines and overhaul and repair of both Russian and western engines.
Pratt & Whitney's strategic alliance partner, MTU, a daughter company of Deutsche Aerospace, intends to participate in this venture.
"The Russian aviation industry is large and has a great technological base," said George David, president of United Technologies.
"We want to participate, and this partnership is a major step," David said. "We offer experience in western commercial business methods, while the Russian industry gives us an impressive industrial and technology base and access to new markets.
"The PS-90P will be our first offering to a rapidly expanding market. We will have this engine certified by 1996, and we may expand the scope of the partnership into other types of engine programs," David said.
"Perm is interested in cooperation with the West. In alliance with United Technologies and its Pratt & Whitney unit, we can speed up plans for the PS-90A engine modifications," said Juri E. Reshetnikov, general designer of JSC Aviadvigatel. "Activity like this makes an exchange of ideas and technologies possible, and opens the way for a long-term, comprehensive strategic partnership," Reshetnikov said.
United Technologies, based in Hartford, Conn., is a designer and builder of advanced technology products for the aerospace, commercial and industrial industries. In addition to Pratt & Whitney, its companies include Otis Elevator, Carrier, Sikorsky Aircraft, Hamilton Standard, United Technologies Automotive, and Norden Systems.
