UNITED STEELWORKERS AND COPPERWELD STEEL COMPANY AGREE TO EXTEND COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENTS

WARREN, Ohio, Dec. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The United Steelworkers of America and Copperweld Steel Company working together have jointly agreed that an extension of the collective bargaining agreements concerning the members of USWA Local 2243 and 7691 are in the best interests of all concerned.
Both parties announced today that the current collective bargaining agreements governing production and maintenance and office and clerical employees, presently scheduled to terminate on Dec. 31, 1993 and Jan. 31, 1994, respectively, will be extended indefinitely, but at least up to and including April 30, 1994 and May 31, 1994, respectively.
Copperweld Steel Company and CSC Industries, Inc. filed voluntary petitions for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code on Nov. 22, 1993. Since that time, the company reports that customers, suppliers and employees have all been extremely supportive. A three month backlog of orders has been maintained, many suppliers are now extending 30 day credit terms and improvements in plantwide productivity are continuing with some departments establishing new production records.
It is expected that the contract extension will now provide the time needed to finalize a plan of reorganization while allowing the company to maintain an uninterrupted supply of high quality SBQ bars to its customers.
