UNITED STATES SURGICAL CORPORATION WINS TWO MAJOR HOSPITAL GROUP CONTRACTS

NORWALK, Conn., Jan. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Leon C. Hirsch, chairman of United States Surgical Corporation (NYSE: USS), announced today that, "Two of the largest purchasing organizations in the nation, AmeriNet, with approximately 950 acute care hospitals, and Health Services Corporation of America (HSCA), with over 800 acute care hospitals, have both signed five-year, sole source contracts with USSC.
"The agreements cover all surgical stapling, laparoscopic and suture products. The contract with HSCA became effective Jan. 1, 1993, and the contract with AmeriNet will become effective Feb. 1, 1993."
Alan Kuebler, vice president of AmeriNet's ValuHealth Division, said, "We anticipate our members will purchase approximately $1.5 billion from USSC over the next five years under this market-setting contract. We believe USSC's unique teaching capability and technologically advanced products will continue to enable our members to deliver quality surgical care at cost-effective pricing."
Tom Jamieson, president of HSCA, said, "The HSCA member group of hospitals should generate approximately $1 billion in purchases of stapling, laparoscopy and sutures from USSC during the next five years. Our relationship with USSC has allowed us to offer our member hospitals the newest technology at the best pricing and the broadest line of wound closure products. We have followed the remarkable growth of USSC since our first agreement in 1984 and look forward to the continued benefit for our members."
United States Surgical Corporation is the world's largest manufacturer and marketer of surgical staplers, the leader in the growing field of minimally invasive surgery and a recent entrant into the suture market.
