UNITED SOLAR SYSTEMS CORP. REPORTS NEW RECORD HIGH EFFICIENCY FOR AMORPHOUS SILICON ALLOY SOLAR MODULE

TROY, Mich., July 20 /PRNewswire/ -- United Solar Systems Corp. announced today it has set a world record of 11.3 percent initial energy conversion efficiency for large-area (one-square-foot) amorphous silicon alloy solar modules. This exceeds the previous world record initial efficiency of 10.7 percent achieved by United Solar Systems Corp. and confirmed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory of Golden, Colo., the national laboratory owned by the United States Department of Energy (DOE).
Conversion efi?ciency is the percentage of sunlight that is converted into electricity. The world record efficiency was achieved by United Solar Systems Corp. (USSC) using the multijunction approach consisting of a two-cell stacked structure in which the cells use materials sensitive to different colors of the solar spectrum. The research work was supported by funding from DOE.
USSC, an American company based in Troy, is a joint venture between Energy Conversion Devices, Inc., also of Troy, and Canon Inc. of Tokyo, Japan. USSC is engaged in research, manufacture and sales of solar panels (modules) and systems. USSC recently announced that it will begin construction this year in Newport News, Va., on the world's largest multijunction solar module manufacturing plant.
Mr. Shin-ichiro Nagashima, president and CEO of USSC, said, "USSC's achievement of high conversion efficiency using low-cost amorphous silicon alloy represents a significant advance toward the development of cost-effective photovoltaic (solar) energy generation."
Photovoltaic systems generate clean, non-polluting energy and have been receiving worldwide attention because of the pollution and environmental problems caused by conventional sources of energy.
Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. is the pioneer in amorphous materials technology. Canon Inc. is a leading international manufacturer of office equipment, photographic and optical products.
