 UNITED RETAIL GROUP OCTOBER 1992 SALES INCREASE 26 PERCENT
 ROCHELLE PARK, N.J., Nov. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- United Retail Group, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: URGI) announced today that total sales for October 1992 were $23.9 million compared to $18.9 million in October 1991, a 26 percent increase. Comparable store sales for the month declined 1 percent measured against October 1991. (October 1991 had a 14 percent comparable store sales increase.) Comparable store sales for October 1992 for the strip-based stores, Sizes Unlimited, and at the mall-based stores, The Avenue, were both slightly negative.
 Year-to-date total sales for fiscal 1992 were $237.9 million, a 21 percent increase, compared to $196.1 million last year. Year-to-date comparable store sales for fiscal 1992 increased 6 percent. (February is the first month of the company's fiscal year.)
 Average store inventories, at month-end, were on plan. Merchandise margins for the month were above plan.
 George R. Remeta, executive vice president and chief financial officer, announced the final completion of two infrastructure projects: converting management of United Retail's credit card program to Citibank (South Dakota), N.A.; and changing the outsourcing provider for United Retail's management information systems to ISSC, a subsidiary of IBM. He stated: "In converting both our credit card management and our MIS outsourcing our associates outperformed very demanding time and budget targets. It was possible to accomplish these major projects simultaneously only because of the dedication and hard work of this team. We are proud of their success." Mr. Remeta added: "I am pleased that the new arrangements meet all of our operational criteria and growth objectives." He also reported that construction of the national distribution center in Troy, Ohio, was on schedule.
 United Retail runs major retail chains devoted to large-size women's clothing. The chains are composed of Sizes Unlimited, which has 236 stores; The Avenue, which has 157 stores; and 16 Plus, which has 95 stores.
