 UNITED INVESTORS MANAGEMENT COMPANY REPORTS INCREASED EARNINGS
 BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Feb. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- United Investors Management Company (NYSE: UTD) reported that net income, excluding realized investment gains, for the year ended Dec. 31, 1991 was $1.74 per share. R.K. Richey, Chairman, stated that this represents a 9 percent increase over 1990 operating results of $1.59 per share. Net realized gains totaled $.02 per share in 1991 compared to net realized losses of $.02 per share in 1990. Total net income for 1991 was $66.8 million, up 12 percent from the $59.6 million earned in 1990.
 Net income, excluding realized investment gains, for the quarter ended Dec. 31, 1991 grew 31 percent to $.47 per share versus $.36 per share for the same period a year ago. Net realized gains were $.02 per share in the last quarter of 1991 compared to net realized losses of $.02 per share in the last quarter of 1990. Total net income for the fourth quarter of 1991 was $18.7 million, a 44 percent increase over the $13.0 million earned in the same quarter of 1990.
 Total revenues for the year were $311 million, up 20 percent from $259 million in 1990. This increase is led by a 91 percent growth in energy operations revenue to $78.6 million, due primarily to the acquisition of Placid Oil Company properties in January 1991. Net investment income rose 5 percent to $56.6 million. Financial services revenue was $115 million, a 5 percent increase over the comparable amount for 1990. Premium income and policy charges rose 4 percent to $57.8 million.
 Assets under management were $10.5 billion at Dec. 31, 1991, a 29 percent increase from the $8.1 billion at the end of 1990. During 1991, annualized premium in force increased 2 percent to $63.2 million, total deposit account values grew 32 percent to $449 million, and total insurance in force rose 1 percent to $14.2 billion.
 At Dec. 31, 1991, total assets were $1.2 billion. Shareholders' equity was $441 million or $11.55 per share, up 15 percent from the $10.03 per share reported a year ago. Return on equity was 16.2 percent for the year.
