 UNITED HEALTHCARE ESTABLISHES CENTER
 FOR HEALTH CARE POLICY AND EVALUATION
 MINNEAPOLIS, July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- United HealthCare Corporation (NYSE: UNH) said it has established a Center for Health Care Policy and Evaluation that will undertake performance, outcomes and cost effectiveness evaluation for both the company and external clients.
 The center will:
 -- infuse UHC activities company-wide with a commitment to measuring and reporting performance;
 -- expand existing UHC research and evaluation activities in outcomes research, patient surveying, and cost-effectiveness analysis;
 -- increase research and data product offerings to external clients; and
 -- participate in major public policy initiatives to influence reform of health care delivery, financing and access.
 Sheila Leatherman will be president of the center. Leatherman, UHC's vice president for research and development since December 1988, is a nationally recognized authority in the areas of managed care, quality management and health care evaluation. The center staff will comprise the former staff of UHC's Research and Development department, including: Corporate Evaluation, directed by Lois Quam; HealthCare Evaluation Services, directed by LuAnn Heinen; and Data Management, directed by Jerry Lutgen.
 UHC chairman, president and CEO William W. McGuire, M.D., said that creation of the Center for Health Care Policy and Evaluation signals United HealthCare's intent and commitment to undertake a major role nationally in the development and evaluation of health care delivery systems and public policy relating to cost, access and quality.
 "This is an especially exciting and appropriate time for our center's formation. Managed care is now widely invoked as a key factor for addressing our nation's health care issues. At the same time, the public, health care purchasers, and policymakers are calling for accountability on the part of those who finance and deliver that care. The Center for Health Care Policy and Evaluation will serve as United HealthCare's agent for formalizing and maintaining that public accountability," McGuire said.
 United HealthCare Corporation is a national leader in health care management, serving purchasers, users, managers and providers of health care since 1974. The company offers a broad range of products through 19 locally based health plans and 9 non-geographically bounded specialty care management companies. The company's services include: HMOs; PPOs; health plan management; pharmaceutical cost management; managed mental health and substance abuse services; utilization management; workers compensation/casualty services; specialized provider networks; employee assistance services; Medicare and managed care programs for the aged; health care evaluation services; information systems; and administrative services.
