UNITED ARAB EMIRATES ACCEPTS AH-64A HELICOPTERS, BECOMES THIRD FOREIGN CUSTOMER TO FIELD COMBAT-PROVEN APACHES

MESA, Ariz., Oct. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The United Arab Emirates (UAE) today accepted delivery of AH-64A Apache multirole combat helicopters in a ceremony held in Abu Dhabi.
The Middle Eastern nation becomes the third international customer to field AH-64A Apaches, which are produced by McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Systems in Mesa.
The UAE ordered the Apaches for its Air Force and Air Defense organization through a Foreign Military Sales (FMS) contract with the U.S. Army. Deliveries will continue through 1994.
All the delivered aircraft, manned solely by UAE Air Force crews recently returned from training in the United States, flew in the ceremony. An agility demonstration, flown by a UAE Air Force Apache squadron commander, was provided for the guests.
Those attending included the Chief of Staff of the UAE armed forces, the U.S. Ambassador, senior UAE officers, U.S. government and industry representatives and other dignitaries. The arrival ceremony was followed by a luncheon hosted by the UAE Air Force and Air Defense.
The U.S. Army has sold 94 Apaches through FMS contracts to customers in five countries: Egypt, Greece, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.
In addition to existing customers, several other nations in Europe, the Middle East, and the Asia-Pacific region have expressed interest in the Apache, which is the U.S. Army's premier attack helicopter.
The Republic of Korea, Kuwait, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom are among several nations that are considering Apaches for their defense forces. McDonnell Douglas estimates a current market for some 500 Apaches worldwide.
The twin-turbine-engine AH-64A Apache, which played a major role in Operation Desert Storm, is the only helicopter capable of day, night, and adverse weather attack helicopter operations using a variety of high technology systems and armament to locate, track, and attack its targets.
