UNITED AND LUFTHANSA FILE FOR APPROVAL OF MARKETING ALLIANCE

CHICAGO, Oct. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines and Lufthansa German Airlines today filed with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for authorization to implement their joint marketing alliance on Jan. 10, 1994.
The alliance, announced on Oct. 4 by United Airlines Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Stephen M. Wolf and Lufthansa Chairman Juergen Weber, is the immediate result of the agreement reached last month by the governments of the United States and Germany which has as a fundamental element the ability of airlines of both countries to form alliances.
In their joint filing, the carriers demonstrate how the alliance will enhance competition and thereby generate further benefits for the traveling and shipping public. Increased flights, connections and convenience in international travel, coordination of the two carriers' baggage handling, and other ground services and facilities to help ensure smooth, problem-free connections are among the benefits that passengers of both airlines will enjoy.
The marketing pact also calls for United and Lufthansa to coordinate their connecting schedules at German and U.S. gateways and to offer other services such as one-stop check-in for connecting flights, joint participation in each other's frequent flier programs, reciprocal use of airport lounges and coordination of terminal facilities at U.S., German and third-country airports.
As a result of their alliance, United and Lufthansa, which are currently ranked fourth and sixth respectively in the trans-Atlantic market, will be able to compete more effectively with the larger carriers in the trans-Atlantic market and with the two other comprehensive alliances that have already received U.S. Government approval: KLM/Northwest and British Airways/USAir.
The carriers asked for expedited DOT approval in order to begin marketing the new services by Nov. 14, 1993.
