UNITED AIRLINES TRAFFIC INCREASES 20.8 PERCENT
CHICAGO, March 4 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines today reported that

its total scheduled revenue passenger miles (RPMs) increased 20.8 percent in February compared with the same month of 1991. Systemwide load factor for the month grew by 2.7 points to 59.5 percent.
In commenting on the month, Vice Chairman John C. Pope said, "While we are certainly pleased with our performance versus 1991, it should be recognized that comparisons to a year ago are distorted by the effect of last year's Persian Gulf war and this month's extra day. International traffic for February rose 77 percent, reflecting a return to more normal levels from the depressed results following the war a year ago, as well as the startup of major new services to Europe and Latin America. The very modest 2 percent increase in our domestic traffic, which is totally attributable to the extra day in February 1992, demonstrates the impact of the sluggish U.S. economy on our business."
For February, the airline's total scheduled RPMs were 5,953,675,000 compared with 4,928,183,000 in February of 1991.
Domestic revenue passenger miles totaled 3,784,757,000, an increase of 2.2 percent from 3,703,647,000 accumulated in February a year ago. Pacific revenue passenger miles totaled 1,644,080,000, an increase of 43.1 percent from 1,148,729,000 a year ago. Atlantic revenue passenger miles totaled 394,223,000, up 758.3 percent from last year. Latin American RPMs were 130,615,000.
Total scheduled available seat miles (ASMs) were 9,998,145,000, up 15.2 percent from 8,680,249,000 a year ago. Domestic ASMs were 6,736,450,000, an increase of 3.8 percent from 6,490,212,000 a year ago. Pacific ASMs totaled 2,272,466,000, up 10.5 percent from 2,056,800,000 a year ago. Atlantic ASMs totaled 664,254,000, up 715.3 percent from 81,477,000. Latin American ASMs were 324,975,000.
The airline flew 4,352,000 passengers in scheduled service in February, an increase of 7.8 percent from 4,038,000 flown a year earlier.
Total cargo ton miles for February were 120,497,000, up 6.9 percent from 112,771,000 a year ago.
