 UNITED AIRLINES LAUNCHES LATIN AMERICAN SERVICE TODAY;
 HISTORIC FIRST FLIGHTS SERVE CARACAS, PORT OF SPAIN
 CHICAGO, Jan. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines will introduce the "Friendly Skies" brand of service to Latin America today when it launches scheduled service between New York and Caracas, Venezuela, and Port of Spain, Trinidad, and between Miami and Caracas.
 "This is an historic moment for United as we begin to implement service on Latin American routes we are acquiring from Pan American World Airways," said Stephen M. Wolf, chairman and president.
 "The initial flights -- linking New York's Kennedy International Airport and Miami International Airport with Caracas and Port of Spain -- will serve as forerunners for new United service coming later this winter to Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama and Uruguay," he said.
 Colorful, traditional ribbon-cutting ceremonies, refreshments and live entertainment at both airports in New York and Miami will create a festive ambiance for inaugural passengers before the maiden flights depart in both cases on Boeing 757-200 aircraft seating 24 customers in first class and 164 in economy.
 The New York-Caracas/Port of Spain schedule is as follows:
 Flight 871 will depart from New York Kennedy at 5 p.m. and arrive in Caracas at 10:45 p.m., depart from Caracas at 11:45 p.m. and arrive at Port of Spain at 1 a.m. Flight 870 will depart from Port of Spain at 7 a.m. and arrive at Caracas at 8:15 a.m., depart from Caracas at 9:30 a.m. and arrive at New York Kennedy at 1:20 p.m.
 Round-trip fares in the New York-Caracas market begin at $445, while round-trip fares in the New York-Port of Spain market begin at $438.
 The Miami-Caracas schedule is as follows:
 Flight 869 will depart from Miami at 6:40 p.m. and will arrive in Caracas at 10:55 p.m. Flight 868 will depart from Caracas at 9 a.m. and arrive in Miami at 11:25 a.m. Passengers from Miami also are able to connect in Caracas to Port of Spain.
 Round-trip fares in both the Miami-Caracas and Miami-Port of Spain markets begin at $428.
 The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) granted United emergency authority to operate the routes to Venezuela and Trinidad pending final departmental approval.
 United reached agreement Dec. 9 in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York to acquire most of Pan American's Latin American route authority for $135 million.
