UNITED AIRLINES DECEMBER TRAFFIC INCREASES 9.2 PERCENT

 CHICAGO, Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines today reported that its total scheduled revenue passenger miles (RPMs) increased 9.2 percent while available seat miles (ASMs) grew by 12.4 percent in December compared with the same month of 1991. The scheduled passenger load factor was 63.1 percent compared with 64.9 percent a year ago.
 "Our decline in load factor was driven by weakness in both the U.S. and the Pacific," said J.C. Pope, president and chief operating officer. "The near-term outlook for these markets is not encouraging."
 The airline's total scheduled RPMs were 7,570,981,000 compared with 6,936,304,000 in December of 1991.
 For December, domestic revenue passenger miles totaled 4,727,828,000, an increase of 1.0 percent from 4,679,711,000 accumulated in December a year ago. Pacific revenue passenger miles totaled 1,842,095,000, an increase of 3.5 percent from 1,780,252,000 a year ago. Atlantic revenue passenger miles totaled 610,328,000, an increase of 39.1 percent from 438,740,000 a year ago. Latin American revenue passenger miles totaled 390,730,000, an increase of 939.1 percent from 37,601,000.
 Total scheduled available seat miles (ASMs) were 12,001,640,000, up 12.4 percent from 10,680,323,000 a year ago.
 Domestic ASMs were 7,752,601,000, an increase of 4.1 percent from 7,447,850,000 a year ago. Pacific ASMs totaled 2,587,668,000, up 5.6 percent from 2,450,353,000 a year ago. Atlantic ASMs totaled 932,918,000, up 28.1 percent from 728,497,000. Latin ASMs totaled 728,453,000, an increase of 1258.5 percent from 53,623,000 a year ago.
 The airline flew 5,400,000 passengers in scheduled service in December, an increase of 3.3 percent from 5,230,000 flown a year earlier.
 Total cargo ton miles for December were 157,808,000, up 19.1 percent from 132,449,000 a year ago.
 Total RPMs including charter flights for December were 7,579,549,000, up 9.0 percent from 6,952,518,000 a year ago.
 JANUARY THROUGH DECEMBER TRAFFIC
 For the 12 months, total scheduled RPMs increased 13.0 percent to 92,488,299,000 from 81,854,037,000 in 1991.
 Total system ASMs increased 11.1 percent to 137,210,480,000 from 123,501,995,000 for the same period last year.
 Passenger load factor year to date was 67.4 percent, up 1.1 points from 66.3 percent in 1991.
 Total cargo ton miles were 1,727,261,000 year to date, an increase of 10.5 percent from 1,563,176,000 last year.
 Total RPMs including charter for the year to date were 92,689,521,000, an increase of 12.6 percent from 82,290,254,000 in 1991.
