UNION SWITCH & SIGNAL TO PROVIDE STATE-OF-THE-ART, INTEGRATED
 CONTROL SYSTEM FOR BOSTON'S MBTA
PITTSBURGH, Feb. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Union Switch & Signal Inc. (US&S) announced that it has been awarded a $25.6 million contract to design, build, and install a state-of-the-art, integrated transit control system for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). US&S will merge two operational sub-systems -- the application control system (ACS) and the operations reporting system (ORS) -- into what will be the most comprehensive and sophisticated transit Operations Control System (OCS) in the world.
In addition to traditional switch and signal rail operations, the OCS also will integrate bus dispatching, maintenance, public adddress, safety, security, and other features giving the OCS dispatcher an all-encompassing view of the entire transit system. The OCS also will include an event management provision which will set priorities for dispatchers enabling them to manage and clear multiple events as well as the capability for dynamic reassignments according to operational conditions -- all from a single keyboard or computer mouse.
According to Walter Alessandrini, president and chief executive officer of Union Switch & Signal who made the announcement, US&S will incorporate a modular, building block system which will meet the MBTA's present operating requirements and allow for enhancements and upgrades with minimal expense and interruption.
The ACS and ORS are each composed of dedicated hardware and software. The software will be housed in two computers, operating in hot-stanby with automatic failover. The alternate computer will be updated continuously and will be ready at any time to assume total control of the entire system. Operator workstations are distributed throughout the system network.
The ACS will provide priority, real time, on-line traffic control functions with an easy-to-use operator interface. Traditional signal system operations, bus operations, system monitoring, console system management and event management, all previously distinct MBTA operations will be channeled into a single control system. The ACS computers will be linked to a video projection system which will provide a color, rear-screen projected overview of MBTA's light and heavy rail operations -- displaying the entire panorama of MBTA's rail territory.
The ORS will provide on-line, relational database management featuring nearly instantaneous access, retrieval, and reporting of data. OCS dispatchers will be able to view CRT screens for up-to-the-minute information on items such as schedules, consist requirements, vehicle identification and status.
A centralized traffic control (CTC) componenet will oversee track circuit status, switch and signal controls and indications, local and remote control of interlockings and block signals as well as entrance and exit routing. A bus operations software module will provide bus dispatchers with digitized maps showing current route and address location information.
At the same time, separate software modules for supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) and systemwide supervisory control system (SSCS) will control elements such as traction power, ventilation fans, and other safety devices in the MBTA system. This critical safety information will give the OCS dispatcher a unified view of conditions throughout the system.
