UNION CENTER NATIONAL BANK OPENS BRANCH IN SCHOOL
 UNION, N.J., June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The first branch of a commercial

bank within a public school building was officially opened today by The Union Center National Bank. Participating in the ribbon cutting for the "Career Center Branch" in Union High School were former New Jersey Gov. Thomas H. Kean, Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Banking Jeff Connor, John J. Davis, president of The Union Center National Bank, and James M. Caulfield, superintendent of the Union Township Public Schools.
More than fifty invited guests attended the ceremony which was held at the outside entrance to the bank on North Third Street. Other members of the dais included Rev. Sidney Pinch of Connecticut Farms Presbyterian Church, who gave the invocation; Gary Restivo, president of the Board of Education; Samuel Fortunato, Union High School Principal and A. Judith Marcus, business department supervisor.
The "Career Center Branch," which will operate as another of the bank's branches, employs Union High School business students who are trained by bank personnel in both professional bank procedures and personal money management. They conduct day-to-day business primarily for students and teachers, but also for the public as well.
The banking program is one part of an overall education/industry partnership to ensure the availability of a qualified workforce. It is part of the curriculum of the high school's Business Education Department under the direction of A. Judith Marcus. Although the banking unit focuses on the necessary skills demanded by an entry level teller's position, Marcus has included the associated skills of written communications, critical thinking, public relations, interpersonal relationships and telephone behavior. Personal traits and grooming are also part of the curriculum. Students who are interested are interviewed for employment at the branch and assigned working hours to accommodate their class schedules.
The "Career Center Branch" is the ninth office for The Union Center National Bank and the seventh in Union. Other offices are located in Springfield and Berkeley Heights.
