UNION CARBIDE UNVEILS UNIPOL II; NEXT GENERATION POLYETHYLENE PRODUCTS WILL BE SHOWCASED IN NEW WORLD-SCALE PLANT SLATED FOR COMPLETION IN 1995

 DANBURY, Conn., March 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Union Carbide Corporation (NYSE: UK) today announced plans to build a unique 650 million-pounds- per-year UNIPOL polyethylene production facility at its Star Plant at Taft, La. Slated for completion early in 1995, the facility will be the world's first gas-phase process plant capable of producing a complete range of low-, and high-density polyethylene products with controlled molecular weight and compositional distributions.
 According to Union Carbide President Dr. William H. Joyce, the major thrust for the new UNIPOL II plant will be the commercial introduction of a new family of easy-processing high-strength, low pressure, low- density polyethylene resins. These new products have been custom designed to be "drop-in" replacements for conventional high-pressure, low-density polyethylene (LDPE) resins in a variety of large-volume LDPE markets, including industrial liners, trash bags and construction and agricultural film.
 "Our new low pressure products can be processed on unmodified film extrusion equipment at rates equal to those of conventional LDPE," Dr. Joyce pointed out. "They will enable fabricators to produce stronger, better performing products on their existing equipment with no additional investment."
 A second UNIPOL II product line, he said, is a family of high molecular weight low pressure resins with physical properties that surpass even those of the so-called "new generation" super-strength linear low-density polyethylenes (LLDPE) and high molecular weight HDPE, yet can be extruded on existing LLDPE or HDPE film fabrication lines. These products, which will be commercialized in the new plant, are being tailored for such high performance market segments as stretch/shrink wrap, heavy-duty shipping sacks and ice bags. The plant will also be capable of producing a full range of other high performance products.
 "The UNIPOL II Process is designed to use new super high-activity Ziegler catalysts, as well as emerging new single-site catalyst systems," Polyolefins Division President Roger B. Staub explained. "Combining proven UNIPOL PE process technology with the extended capabilities of these new catalyst systems opens the door to the production of a variety of unique and previously unavailable linear polyethylene products."
 The new facility will be located within Union Carbide's existing Star Plant at Taft, La, and when completed, will boost polyethylene capacity at the site to nearly 1.7 billion pounds annually. "Locating this unit at our Star site will let us take advantage of some very favorable economics, as well as investment tax incentives expected to be provided by the State of Louisiana," Mr. Staub pointed out.
 With over 600 reactor years of experience with its UNIPOL Process, Union Carbide is the world leader in low pressure, gas-phase technology, recognized worldwide as the most versatile and cost-effective route to polyethylene. When onstream in 1995, the new facility will hike Union Carbide's capacity for low pressure, gas-phase linear resins to some 3.2 billion pounds and, together with its licensees, to 18.3 billion pounds of installed UNIPOL PE Process capacity worldwide.
