UNION CARBIDE TO INCREASE ACROLEIN CAPACITY
DANBURY, Conn., March 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Union Carbide Corporation

(NYSE: UK) has announced a 50 percent expansion of its acrolein production capacity at Taft, La. The capacity increase was planned in support of Carbide's acrolein derivatives business and is scheduled to come on stream by the end of 1993.
Acrolein is primarily used as an intermediate in the animal feed industry. It is also an intermediate in the production of glutaraldehyde, a biocide material, and a component of leather tanning products and other industrial chemicals. Acrolein is also an intermediate in the manufacture of cycloaliphatic epoxides used in coatings.
Joseph C. Soviero, president of the Specialty Chemicals Division, said, "The expansion is expected to improve the flexibility and back-up systems at the Taft plant, thereby continuing to assure customers of a reliable source of supply. It is part of Union Carbide's strategy to solidify its portfolio of strong businesses in which Carbide will be the low-cost and preferred supplier."
