UNION CARBIDE INDUSTRIAL GASES PLANS MAJOR EXTENSION OF
 HOUSTON-TEXAS CITY HYDROGEN PIPELINE NETWORK
DANBURY, Conn., April 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The Linde Division of Union Carbide Industrial Gases Inc. ("UCIG") has announced plans to double the length of its Houston-Texas City hydrogen pipeline network to over 150 miles, and to increase the network's hydrogen supply capability by 70 percent to more than 100 million cubic feet (2.8 million cubic meters) per day. The plans are tied in with a new contract to supply hydrogen to Star Enterprise, of Port Arthur, and adding a third hydrogen source for the pipeline through a long-term contract with Lyondell Petrochemical Company in Channelview, Texas.
Linde expects to complete the extension in 1992 with approximately 70 miles of pipeline added to its present 72-mile network to connect the Star refinery and 10 miles added to connect the Lyondell facility.
{"In addition to enhancing our supply reliability, the extension will provide flexibility in meeting the requirements of all users of the hydrogen pipeline network. It also anticipates the growing needs of the oil refining market for consistent high-quality product," said Bill Koepplin, UCIG vice president, On-Site Gases.
An on-site pressure swing adsorption ("PSA") system will be used to recover and purify the hydrogen-containing streams received from Lyondell Petrochemical. The PSA system will be provided by UOP, a joint venture between Union Carbide Corporation ("UCC") (NYSE: UK) and Allied Signal, Inc. Linde also uses PSA purification for hydrogen feedstock supplied from its other pipeline sources in Texas City and Deer Park, Texas.
Union Carbide Industrial Gases Inc. ranks as the largest industrial gas company in North and South America and one of the three largest in the world, with 1991 consolidated sales of $2.5 billion.
