Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  Christmas Day.

``I have a 5 1/2-year-old son and we had Christmas this morning,'' Jones said between stops in his postal Jeep in the Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  area. ``He got all his stuff, so he really didn't care if I hung around. It's something nice I can do for the community.''

One of about six postal carriers from the Valencia office who delivered parcels Tuesday, Jones personified the perfect Los Angeles-area Santa: tanned legs, sunglasses sunglasses  A tinted pair of glasses used to ↓ light arriving at the eye, which are labeled according to the amount of UV light blocked; nonprescription glasses are classified according to use and amount of UV radiation blocked

and a red hat that drew stares from passers-by in the neighborhood.

When he arrived at one door - across the street from a golf course sprinkled with holiday golfers - he was greeted by a pajama-clad woman who was surprised that he was working on Christmas.

Her boyfriend, curious about the unexpected visitor, was equally shocked.

``I can't believe you're working on Christmas,'' said Robert Houfek, 32. ``I actually got the call this morning (from my sister) and I had to tell her, nope, it's not here. I definitely didn't expect her package to arrive on Christmas Day.''

In addition to his sister's package, postmarked in Michigan, Houfek's girlfriend, Jennifer Price, received a package from her grandmother in the unexpected delivery.

``My grandmother lives in Arkansas,'' Price said. ``I wasn't expecting this today. It's just fantastic.''

Jones, a Canyon Country resident, got similar reactions from every house he visited. And he said the extra duty was worth the reactions.

``It's just to help other people around the town enjoy their holiday,'' he said. ``These packages were meant to arrive by Christmas.''

After Jones left, Houfek and Price realized what a kind gesture they had just witnessed.

``Our big conversation last night was that it really didn't seem like Christmas this year,'' Houfek said. ``We've just been thinking about what's going on What's Going On is a record by American soul singer Marvin Gaye. Released on May 21, 1971 (see 1971 in music), What's Going On reflected the beginning of a new trend in soul music.  in the world, with the war. But people like that have definitely gone the extra mile this year to put us in the spirit and remind us what it's all about.''
