Kings coach Andy Murray had to display the shuffling skills of a Las Vegas Las Vegas (läs vā`gəs), city (1990 pop. 258,295), seat of Clark co., S Nev.; inc. 1911. Nobody seemed willing to cut the Kings any slack. The crowd booed during the third period, team captain Mattias Norstrom questioned his teammates' effort and Murray threatened to make changes if certain unnamed players didn't improve.

``It doesn't matter who we have in the lineup,'' Norstrom said, ``It was just a lack of effort, and we didn't work hard enough to have any lucky breaks go our way.''

Murray was even more direct in his analysis.

``We've got some guys who better be taking a look around,'' Murray said. ``We've got a lot of injured bodies right now, and there's going to be competition for spots. We can't afford to have players who aren't scoring making some of the mistakes they are making.''

Jaroslav Bednar, one of the players the Kings traded to the Panthers on Tuesday for defenseman Dmitry Yushkevich, had two assists to beat his hobbled former teammates.

Even worse for the Kings, Yushkevich couldn't play because of a ruptured blood vessel blood vessel

missed about 15 minutes of game action when he was injured on a first-period penalty kill, though he returned in the second period.

After a scoreless first period, the Kings went on the power play just 4:05 into the second and scored off the ensuing faceoff. The puck went back to defensemen Mathieu Schneider, and with Mike Cammalleri running interference in front of the net, Schneider beat Florida goalie Jani Hurme.

Florida needed just 31 seconds to answer, as it swarmed in front of Kings goalie Felix Potvin, who was made to flop all over the crease to deter shots. The Kings were unable to clear the puck, and eventually it bounced to Ivan Novoseltsev, who took a shot from a tough angle and scored into an open part of the net.

Bednar took a pass from behind the Kings' net and dropped a pass to Kristian Huselius, who beat Potvin with a one-time shot from the faceoff circle as the Panthers led 2-1 after two periods.

``I don't think we've played a worse period all year than we did in that second period,'' Norstrom said.

Andreas Lilja, the other former King, didn't fare as well, as he took the holding penalty that set up Schneider's goal. That was forgotten by the third period, when Sandis Ozolinsh scored a power-play goal 4:38 into the period to give the Panthers a two-goal lead.

The Kings nearly tied the game with a shorthanded goal just 15 seconds earlier, but Hurme slid across the crease to make a tough stop on a one-time shot by Kings defenseman Aaron Miller.

Florida counterattacked, and Ozolinsh fired a slap shot from five feet inside the blue line with Niklas Hagman running interference in front of the net. Potvin didn't get a good look at the shot, and it beat him.

Florida scored its fourth goal 11:01 into the period when Bednar took a loose puck behind the Kings' net and fed a centering pass to Marcus Nilson, who beat the stranded Potvin. The Kings' second goal came with 6:04 remaining when Ziggy Palffy swatted at a loose puck in midair and put it in the net.

Viktor Kozlov capped the scoring with an empty-net goal with 2:43 remaining.
