Work is progressing on construction of Cole Middle School's long-awaited new campus on 20 acres at 30th Street East and Avenue I.

The new $9.3 million Cole Middle School, named after the late Gifford C. Cole, a longtime school board member who died in 1991, will house about 1,000 students.

Half of the price for the new school will be paid by the state, and half by the district. The district's share will come from a bond issue approved by Eastside voters in November 1997.
