CHICAGO (PAN): United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon Ban Ki-Moon (bän kē-mn), 1944–, South Korean diplomat, secretary-general of the United Nations (2007–), b. Chungju, grad. "While noting the steps the Afghan authorities have taken on governance, Ban said that amid a global fiscal crisis donors would continue to link long-term aid with delivery on governance," a UN spokesman said.

Reiterating UN's readiness to provide support to Afghan authorities to produce credible and democratic elections, he underscored the importance of political reconciliation, socio-economic development and human rights, especially to improve the status of women and girls.

US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta met his British counterpart Philip Hammond to discuss the importance of supporting a sustainable Afghan national security force.

"They discussed the unfolding transition in Afghanistan, the importance of supporting a sustainable Afghan National Security Force and the need to frame an effective enduring relationship with Afghanistan beyond 2014," Pentagon Press Secretary George Little said.
