UN and global-warming activists turn up the heat.

The United Nations and the environmental lobby are turning up the political heat in preparation for the big UN Climate Change Conference in December on the Indonesian island of Bali. The Bali Conference, says the UN Chronicle Online, "will build upon the political momentum generated by the UN General Assembly thematic debate on 'Climate change as a global challenge' and the high-level meeting on climate change to be convened by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on 24 September."

The UN calendar for the entire year has been scripted to build political pressure for a new climate change agreement, since the Kyoto Protocol is due to expire in 2012. The program was kicked off with the year-long, four-part release of the latest UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, Climate Change 2007. The first three installments of the report were issued in February, April, and May, with each one generating alarmist headlines of coming doom due to human use of carbon fuels. The fourth installment is due out in November, just in time to kick-start a new round of alarmism and add to the ginned-up momentum.

In addition, the massive UN bureaucracy is pushing climate change thematic events and articles virtually every day. Some of the major events include:

* A September 5-7 NGO Conference at the UN Headquarters in New York bringing together 2,000 activists of Non-Governmental Organizations from 80 countries to inform them on "the threat of catastrophe posed by climate change" and "inspire participants to take action."

* A September 10-13 Berlin summit of the G8 countries chaired by special UN climate change envoy Gro Harlem Brundtland.

* A September 24 special "High-Level Event" convened by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to "send a powerful political signal to the negotiations in Bali that 'business as usual' will not do."
