), Synopsys, Inc. (Nasdaq:SNPS SNPS Space Nuclear Power System ), and Virtual Silicon today announced that, through their ongoing collaborative efforts, customers have a new alternative for getting their designs to tape out, and therefore final production, more quickly. UMC customers can now use Synopsys' Physical Synthesis, a proven methodology for solving timing closure challenges, with physical IP from Virtual Silicon targeted towards UMC process technologies. The UMC 0.13-micron libraries with Synopsys' Physical Compiler views will be available from Virtual Silicon in Q2' 2001. The 0.18- and 0.15-micron libraries will also be ready for download from Virtual Silicon's web site in the same time frame.

"We are constantly looking at new approaches to enable our customers to get to silicon faster and accordingly have collaborated with Synopsys and Virtual Silicon to create solutions for our joint customers," said Edward Wan, vice president of worldwide field engineering at UMC. "Virtual Silicon has been helping with this effort by creating libraries that enable EDA tools and IP to target our fabs."

"We are very pleased that UMC is supporting the Synopsys' Physical Synthesis methodology with Virtual Silicon libraries. UMC is the first foundry vendor to announce support for our physical synthesis tools," said Sanjiv Kaul, senior vice president and general manager of Synopsys' Physical Synthesis business unit. "Some of our joint customers have already taped out Refers to the completion of the design of a chip. The next stage is to put it into production. The term comes from the early days when designs were transferred to the fabricator via magnetic tape.  with UMC and with this announcement we expect many more customer successes. Synopsys' Physical Synthesis is the leading timing closure solution with support from multiple semiconductor vendors."

"Our customers have been achieving excellent results with Synopsys' Physical Synthesis and our eSi-Route libraries for UMC," said Taylor Scanlon, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Virtual Silicon. "We are committed to support Synopsys' Physical Synthesis tools with our Silicon Ready IP to provide the accurately modeled timing and placement solutions required by today's leading-edge SOC designers that utilize UMC's fabs."

About UMC

UMC, a world leading semiconductor foundry, operates seven wafer fabs in Taiwan's Hsinchu Science Park Hsinchu Science Park (Chinese: 新竹科學園區; Hanyu Pinyin: Xīnzhú Kē Xué Yuán Qū; Tongyong Pinyin: Sinjhú Ke Syué Yuán Cyu) was established by the government of Taiwan, ROC on December 15, 1980 with investment from the Kuomintang. . UMC's Japanese subsidiary, Nippon Foundry Inc., has one fab in Japan, and UMC's joint venture with Hitachi, Trecenti Technologies, began production in its 300mm fab in Japan in 2000. UMC is also nearing completion of a 300mm facility in Taiwan's Tainan Science Park Tainan Science Park of Taiwan is located near the historic city of Tainan between Sinshih, Shanhua and Anding Townships of Tainan County with a total area of 2,565 acres, and is a part of the Southern Taiwan Science Parks (STSP).  and has announced plans for a third 300mm fab to be built in Singapore. UMC is a leader in foundry technology, with facilities that reached an annual output of more than 2.4 million eight-inch equivalent wafers in 2000 and produced more IC's in 0.18-micron and smaller technologies than any other foundry that year. UMC's joint development program with IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company.
