UMAX Computer Corporation Introduces World's Most Powerful Mac OS-Compatible System.

FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 7, 1997--UMAX Computer Corporation today announced a new high end model in its SuperMac S900 family of Mac OS-compatible workstations that provide industry-leading performance.

The SuperMac S900/240 is based on a 240 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  PowerPC 604e processor and is the most powerful commercially available Mac OS-compatible system on the market. It is priced at $5795, with an estimated street price under $5000.

"Our goal on the high end of our SuperMac product family is to bring systems to market that incorporate the highest performing PowerPC processors General-purpose PowerPC processors
IBM/Motorola
  • 601 50 and 66 MHz
  • 602 consumer products (multiplexed data/address bus)
  • 603/603e/603ev notebooks, embedded devices
  • 604/604e/604ev workstations and low end servers
as soon as they become available," said Andy Chang, senior vice president of worldwide sales for UMAX Computer Corporation.

"The PowerPC's performance and scalability advantages over the Intel architecture are most apparent at the high end. We expect that users will experience substantial performance advantages with the UMAX SuperMac S900/240 when compared with a typical Pentium Pro-based system."

A.S.P.D.

Like the rest of the S900 family, the SuperMac S900/240 has been engineered using UMAX' Advanced Scaleable Processor Design (A.S.P.D.). A.S.P.D. systems implement the primary processor on a user upgradeable card, allowing for easy upgrades to faster processors as they become available.

The systems also feature a slot for a secondary processor, providing users with the option of inexpensively moving up to a dual-processor system at a later date.

Standard Features

The S900/240 ships with 32 MB of interleaved main memory that can be expanded to a maximum of 1 GB, 512K level-2 cache, 8 MB VRAM See video RAM.

All SuperMac S900 systems ship with built-in Ethernet (10Base-T and the Apple AAUI (Apple AUI) Apple's version of the Ethernet AUI connector. See AUI and 10Base5.

All S900 systems feature two more SCSI buses, one with internal Fast SCSI-2 and one with standard external SCSI, along with two serial ports and two Apple Desktop Bus See ADB.  (ADB (Apple Desktop Bus) A low-speed serial bus for connecting keyboards, mice and other input devices on Apple IIgs and Macintosh computers. The S900 systems also include 16-bit CD-quality stereo audio that can be accessed by either a front or rear audio jack.

All SuperMac S900 systems also feature a PCI-to-PCI bridge that enables direct communication between any of the devices in the system's six PCI slots, rather than using separate controllers to manage communications between two three-slot PCI (1) (Payment Card Industry) See PCI DSS.

 banks.

The resulting user advantage is a system that is more expandable and easier to configure than any other system supporting six PCI slots on the Mac OS-compatible market.

E100 Advanced Networking and Storage Standard

UMAX Computer Corporation's E100 extended performance card provides both Ultra Wide SCSI and 100Base-T Ethernet networking is standard with the SuperMac S900/240. The card is available as an option for other S900 systems.

Ultra Wide SCSI enables 16-bit wide data access to disk storage at a rate of up to 40MB/second, approximately quadrupling storage access maximum performance when compared with standard SCSI. Support for 100Base-T networks allows organizations with users who need to exchange large files to network those professionals much faster than today's standard 10Base-T networks.

Warranty and Technical Support

UMAX' basic warranty extends for one year and provides for a three-day onsite response time, with unlimited access to a toll-free technical support line that is open from 6 a.m. to 12 midnight, Central Standard Time, seven days a week.

Service is provided nationwide through both a network of resellers who have qualified as UMAX Authorized Service Providers and by DecisionOne, the largest independent computer systems support organization in North America with 3,900 technical personnel deployed in 150 service offices.

Availability

The first SuperMac S900/240 systems will ship in February, 1997.
