ULTRA HIGH-MILEAGE VEHICLES TO COMPETE JUNE 4-5 AT EATON PROVING GROUNDS

KALAMAZOO, Mich., June 2 /PRNewswire/ - Thirty-six colleges and universities from across the U.S. and Canada will compete in the 14th annual Society of Automotive Engineers' (SAE) Supermileage Competition, June 4-5 at Eaton Corporation's Proving Grounds in Marshall, Mich. Also fielding two teams this year is Marshall High School, which finished in ninth place last year.
The SAE Supermileage event is a competition of ultra high-mileage vehicles designed and modified by engineering students at colleges and universities across the U.S. and Canada. Each team is given the same Briggs & Stratton engine to start, and the students make significant modifications to the engine as they build the car from scratch.
The competition is based solely on miles per gallon (mpg), calculated after six laps on the 1.6-mile course. The University of California-Davis won last year's event by averaging more than 1,645 mpg.
To increase its mpg efficiency, cars will coast on hills and some flat portions of the course. Each team is equipped with radio communications and a pit crew. Each vehicle must average 15 miles per hour or be penalized.
The technical inspection and trial runs will be held on Friday, June 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The trial runs should begin at noon. The actual competition is Saturday, June 5, beginning at 10 a.m.
Other major engineering schools competing this year include the University of Southern California, Ryerson Polytech, the University of Kansas, California State University at Northridge and Ecole Polytechnique.
Events on both days are not open to the public.
