ULTIMAP REVAMPS STRATEGY FOR LOWER REVENUE EXPECTATIONS

ULTIMAP REVAMPS STRATEGY FOR LOWER REVENUE EXPECTATIONS
ST. PAUL, Minn., Sept. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Ultimap Corporation

(NASDAQ: UMAP) today announced that the company will reduce its workforce and redirect its sales efforts in a response to budget constraints affecting the local governments that are its present and prospective customers.
The company also said that due to accelerated technical progress, its new generation of geographical information systems software will be available ahead of schedule in the first quarter of next year. The earlier availability of this new software, designed to run on multiple hardware platforms, reduces the need for continuing investment in the company's migration of its existing software to other hardware platforms.
Bob Bro, president, said Ultimap will lay off 20 of its 50 employees and will concentrate its efforts in the short-term on providing software and software-related services to its existing base of local government installations nationwide and targeted new accounts. These services include standard software applications and digital base-map development, on workstations and personal computers.
"We've expected an improvement in local government budgets as the nation emerged from recession," said Dennis Mathisen, president of the Marshall Financial Group, Inc. and Ultimap chairman of the board. "However, the first results of 1993 budget cycles, presented in July, make it apparent that a dramatic and persistent retrenching of the local government sector has begun, and we are taking the proactive steps necessary to maximize Ultimap's likelihood of success in that environment."
Bro said the company now believes that upcoming budget deliberations for governments with October and January fiscal years will produce similar results, causing the company's revenues to fall short of expectations. However, the company believes that the short-term plan it has implemented will allow it to capitalize on its market in the future.
The company has scheduled an information meeting on these developments for shareholders and other interested members of the investment community at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 18, at the Minneapolis convention center.
Ultimap Corporation is a leading supplier of geographic information products and services, providing solutions that meet critical management needs of local governments and utilities.
