UK-wide post strike looms.

Summary: The two sides in the postal dispute have clashed as 120,000 postal workers start voting on whether to launch a national strike.

The two sides in the postal dispute have clashed as 120,000 workers start voting on whether to launch a national strike.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) said the result of the ballot will be known early next month, threatening widespread disruption to mail deliveries.

The long-running row over jobs, pay and services has already sparked a series of walkouts across the country.

The union and the Royal Mail blame each other amid claims postmen and women are being put under "unbearable pressure" to implement changes.

Dave Ward, deputy general secretary of the CWU says a "period of calm" was needed over the next six weeks to give the two sides time to discuss how the service should be modernised.

Royal Mail's managing director Mark Higson insists changes being made are in response to falling demand as people switch to other forms of communication such as email and text messages.
