UCLA UPDATE: UCLA BOOTS LEMAU'U, SMITH OFF FOOTBALL TEAM.Byline: - Brian Dohn Promising defensive lineman Junior Lemau'u, who would have been a key member of the UCLA football team's interior line, and reserve receiver Antwuan Smith were dismissed from the team for a failure to comply with team policies, coach Karl Dorrell announced Tuesday. Lemau'u, who played at Long Beach Poly High, did not follow guidelines established upon his return from an eight-game suspension for violation of team rules last season, according to sources. He made five tackles as a freshman before his suspension. He was reinstated in January, had a productive spring and was listed as a backup to Kevin Brown at one of the defensive tackle spots. Smith, who red-shirted last season and has four years of eligibility remaining, said he was dismissed because of academics. ``You have to pass a certain amount of classes to be eligible for the next year, and I didn't do that,'' Smith said. ``I was going to be ineligible. I don't know. Everything just didn't work out.'' The players were told a few weeks ago their scholarships would not be renewed. ``All of our players are expected to meet certain guidelines to remain in our program,'' Dorrell said. ``Junior and Antwuan have had several opportunities to meet those guidelines and have failed, so they are no longer part of our program.'' |
