UCLA UPDATE: HOWLAND GETS FIRST RECRUIT.

 received the first commitment of the Ben Howland Ben Howland (born May 28, 1957 in Lebanon, Oregon) is an American college head coach of men's basketball.

He has been the head coach of the University of California, Los Angeles since 2003, and recently signed a contract extension through 2013.

Afflalo, who is 6-foot-4, 180-pounds, took an unofficial visit to UCLA on Tuesday - Howland's second day on campus. Afflalo, who also was interested in Stanford, Arizona, Oregon, Kansas and DePaul - among others - said afterward that he expected to wait until summer to make a decision. But he told Howland at a banquet that he wanted to attend UCLA.

Afflalo, who has a 3.5 grade-point average and has scored 1030 on the SAT, already is qualified academically. In addition to Afflalo, UCLA has two more scholarships for next year.
