UCLA NOTEBOOK: UCLA GETS CHANCE TO GO BOWLING.Byline: Brian Dohn Staff Writer After several days of negotiations involving two conferences, a handful of schools and three bowls, everyone but the University of Washington got what it wanted. The Silicon Valley Football Classic The Silicon Valley Football Classic, sometimes referred to simply as the Silicon Valley Bowl or Silicon Valley Classic, was an NCAA-certified Division I-A post-season college football bowl game that was played at Spartan Stadium on the South Campus of San José State did the expected Tuesday and invited Fresno State and UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University) UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX to play in the Dec. 30 game at San Jose San Jose, city, United States San Jose (sănəzā`, săn hōzā`), city (1990 pop. 782,248), seat of Santa Clara co., W central Calif.; founded 1777, inc. 1850. ``This bowl will give our seniors the opportunity to leave UCLA on a good note,'' Bruins coach Karl Dorrell Karl Dorrell (born December 18, 1963 in Alameda, California) is the first black head coach in the history of the UCLA Bruins college football team, a position he took on December 18, 2002. said. ``For our younger players, they can gain valuable experience with additional practice time. I also feel that playing in a bowl is a benefit in the area of recruiting, because it gives the young men we are recruiting the opportunity to come to campus and see the future of our program.'' Fresno State's bid is contingent on the Big 12 Conference getting two teams into Bowl Championship Series games, which is expected to happen. That allows Boise State to play in the Fort Worth Bowl, sends Tulsa to the Humanitarian Bowl and places the Bulldogs in the Silicon Valley game. Either way, though, UCLA (6-6), on a four-game losing streak, is playing, and Washington (6-6) is not. As part of the bowl agreement, UCLA will receive $575,000, most of which goes toward expenses. The school must guarantee the sale of 8,000 tickets, but the Pacific-10 Conference will pay for up to 4,000 tickets if UCLA, which traveled less than 1,000 fans for the Las Vegas Bowl The Las Vegas Bowl is an NCAA-sanctioned Division I-A post-season college football bowl game that has been played annually at 40,000-seat Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada since 1992. last season, doesn't sell its allotment. UCLA has an alumni base of more than 25,000 in the Bay Area and more than 20 players from Northern California on its roster. ``We anticipate there's going to be a lot of blue in that stadium, and we know there's going to be a lot of red,'' UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero said. ``It's a great matchup for this bowl. For UCLA, it's an opportunity to move forward, and we're excited to be in it.'' Fresno State (7-5) and UCLA last met in 2000, with the Bruins winning 24-21. UCLA beat the Bulldogs 35-21 in 1999. ``Playing UCLA is a great opportunity for our program,'' said Fresno State coach Pat Hill, a Crespi High of Encino and Valley College product. ``It's very hard for us to get games against Pac-10 teams from California, especially on a neutral field.'' Kickoff for the game, televised by ESPN ESPN Entertainment and Sports Programming Network 2, is 7:30 p.m. Brian Dohn, (818) 713-3607 brian.dohn(at)dailynews.com CAPTION(S): box Box: Daily News/CBS 2/KCAL 9 SPORTS CENTRAL POWER RANKINGS - Scott Magoloff |
