Manning, a three-year star in baseball and football at Fresno Edison, believes he's been denigrated by Fresno State coach Pat Hill.

``I know coach Hill feels some animosity toward me,'' Manning said. ``He'll say stuff and downtalk my skills. I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

``It amazes me that he'd say that,'' said Hill, who says he's known Manning for five years. ``If that's the way he feels, I feel bad about that. I've never gotten into a (war of words) about Ricky Manning. I'm not going to brownnose brown·nose or brown-nose

him, but I think he's a great player. He's a humble kid. I've got nothing but good things to say about him as a player and a person.''

Manning concedes that Hill has never said anything to him personally.

``I just hear things, rumors,'' said Manning, who is close to about a half-dozen Bulldogs, including former high school teammates Atnaf Harris, Tierre Sams and Deandre Gilbert. ``He probably says it to get his players going. I know he wants to beat me. If I make a play, they're going to come right back at me.''

Manning, one of the best players to come out of Fresno in years, told Hill early in the recruiting process that he was going to leave town for college. ``Very rarely will a kid be that honest,'' Hill said. ``We knew we had no chance.''

On signing day, Manning's decision to attend UCLA dominated the front pages of Fresno-area papers. Hill remarked the next day that it would be nice if some of the local kids who stayed home were given more publicity. His comments caused a flap The communications protocol used by AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). FLAP runs over TCP/IP and provides the header format for transmitting IM commands and data.  for any misunderstanding.

``I got a lot of pub. They blew me up in high school,'' Manning said. ``Maybe he didn't like that.''

Last season, Manning made a critical play in UCLA's 35-21 victory over the Bulldogs. With the Bruins leading 17-7, Fresno State was driving for a touchdown in the final minute of the first half. But Manning intercepted a pass and returned it 83 yards to the Fresno State 11-yard line with 12 seconds left in the half.

The Bruins kicked a field goal on the final play of the half.

``A lot of people wanted me to say (bad) things about him last year, but I never got caught up in that,'' Hill said. ``Why he'd say that I have no idea.''

--Faster feet: On his interception last season, Manning was run down by Harris, his former high school teammate. In fact, Manning, a quarterback at Edison, used to throw to Harris.

``I told him now I'm not 4.6 (in the 40-yard dash), I'm 4.4,'' Manning said. ``He won't catch me now.''
