UCLA NOTEBOOK: SAFETY'S STATUS UNCERTAIN; WILLIAMS' CUTTING ABILITY ON ANKLE NEEDS TESTING.

Byline: Jon Wilner Daily News Staff Writer

After a rare weekend off, the Bruins returned to practice Monday with Shaun Williams' status for the Arizona game still uncertain.

Williams, a senior free safety who missed the Tennessee and Texas games because of a sprained right ankle, was cautiously optimistic about his chances to face Arizona quarterback Keith Smith For other persons named Keith Smith, see Keith Smith (disambiguation).

Keith Smith(1952-2006) was a former English rugby player; he excelled in playing centre. He first played with Yorkshire Colts rugby then advanced to Roundhay.
, a Newbury Park native.

for sure, but it looks like I'll play,'' Williams said.

He no longer wears an air cast and can run straight ahead without a limp. But he has not passed the crucial test: making full-speed cuts on the tender ankle.

He participated in light drills Monday. More rigorous workouts come today and Wednesday, with a determination to follow.

``It appears he's heading in the right direction,'' coach Bob Toledo Bob Toledo (born March 4, 1946, in San Jose, California) is an American football coach, recently hired as head coach at Tulane University. He is best-known as the thirteenth head coach at UCLA.  said. ``It appears he's getting healthy. . . . There's a real good possibility he'll play.''

Williams has lost so much conditioning that even if he does play, it won't be for extended periods. Six miles per day on the exercise cycle does not equate to game shape. There is also a risk of further injury, especially if he fatigues.

``If I'm not 100 percent and I get injured again, I'll miss more time and that will hurt the team,'' he said. ``They said it was a three-four week injury, and this is my third week.''

``Evidently, they don't need me,'' he said, smiling.

Out of the red: Toledo used the bye week to evaluate true freshmen who did not play in the first two games. Safety Jason Stephens Jason Stephens is an Australian actor and comedian who starred in The Late Show. Article - 'Jason Stephens'

His playing time depends on Williams and reserve free safety Glenn Thompkins, who has a sore foot.

Tod McBride, converted from receiver to free safety after a month-long suspension, is not ready to play because of sore knees.

Other freshmen who impressed the coaches during the bye week: defensive lineman Steve Sua, offensive tackle Dave Wilford and safety Ryan Nece Ryan Clint Nece (born February 24, 1979 in San Bernardino, California) is a professional American football player who plays for the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers as one of their starting linebackers. .

The Swarm is back: Arizona's defense ranked seventh in the Pacific-10 last season but has returned to its Desert Swarm status, at least statistically.

The Wildcats lead the conference in run defense (61.3 yards per game) and total defense (227).

``They get you in one-on-one matchups and it's hard to double-team them,'' Toledo said. ``It's a very aggressive defense with tough-minded players with a lot of ability.''

Injury update: Aside from Williams, right cornerback Aaron Roques Roques is the name or part of the name of several communes in France:
  • Roques, in the Haute-Garonne department
  • Roques, in the Gers department
(shoulder) is the only member of the two-deep who might not play this week.

``We're as healthy as we could expect to be at this time of year,'' Toledo said.

True freshman Marques Marques may refer to:
  • marque, or brand name
  • Marqués, a surname
  • A Spanish form of Marquis.
  • ''Marques, a tall ship.
Anderson will start at cornerback for the second consecutive game, regardless of Roques' availability.
