Byline: Jill Painter Staff Writer

SAN DIEGO San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  - Matt Willis Mathew James Willis (born 8 May 1983) is a British singer-songwriter from Tooting, south London. He first found fame as a member of the British band, Busted. Personal life
Willis was born in Tooting in London, later moving to East Molesey, Surrey, where he grew up.

 this season.

Willis, who ran track for UCLA, returned to the field as one of the Bruins' kick returners and backup receivers Saturday at Qualcomm Stadium Los Angeles/San Diego Chargers

.

It was a long time coming for Willis, who gave up football after his sophomore year at Servite High of Anaheim, where he was a receiver, defensive back and returned kicks and punts.

``I thought track was what I wanted to do, but I love both,'' Willis said. ``I gave up football to run track, and I regretted it.''

As a sophomore last year, Willis ran the 400-meter hurdles in 56.41 seconds. Willis' career best 400-meter time is 48.91 seconds, which he ran in the U.S. Junior Nationals. And he ran a 4.47-second 40 on grass last spring.

Willis said he hoped his speed would give him an advantage before he even returned a kickoff.

``When people know (you're fast), sometimes it's a mental thing,'' he said. ``They know if they miss (a tackle), it's over.''

Willis didn't run track last spring. Instead, he participated in spring ball with the football team. He said he's still working on running precise routes, and it's getting easier every day.

``Things have started to click,'' Willis said. ``At first I didn't know what to expect, but I've gotten a better, and now I'm getting after it.''
