UCLA NOTEBOOK: RECRUIT CLASS MAY BE ONE OF BRUINS' BEST.

Byline: Jon Wilner Daily News Staff Writer

UCLA's 1984 recruiting class - bolstered by back-to-back Rose Bowl victories and including Willie Anderson Willie Anderson could refer to:
  • Willie Anderson (golfer), a Scottish golfer
  • Willie Anderson (rugby coach), a famous rugby coach
  • Willie Anderson (NFL), an American football player.
, Gaston Green Gaston Alfred Green III (born August 1, 1966 in Los Angeles, California) is a former professional American football player who was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the 1st round (14th overall) of the 1988 NFL Draft. A 5'10", 189-lb. , Ken Norton This article is about the hall of fame boxer. For Super Bowl Champion American football Linebacker, see Ken Norton, Jr..

Kenneth Howard Norton (b. August 9 1943, Jacksonville, Illinois) is a former world champion heavyweight boxer.
, Mel Farr, Terry Tumey, Eric Ball and Darryl Henley - is generally considered the best in school history.

But coach Bob Toledo and his staff, with enthusiasm not seen around the Morgan Center in years, are gathering a collection of talent that some day might rival the '84 group.

Last weekend, the Bruins received two more oral commitments: from Denver receiver Jon Dubravac and linebacker Rob Kolaczynski of Canon, Penn., who is one of the best in Big Ten country. A bigger, quicker version of Brian Willmer, Kolaczynski rejected scholarship offers from Notre Dame and Ohio State.

UCLA's commitment total stands at 10, with 15 spots left to fill. Toledo's two-pronged strategy is neither secretive nor complicated. His staff offers recruits appealing styles of play on offense and defense - what quarterback wouldn't want to play for Toledo and Al Borges, seeing what they've done for Cade McNown? Plus, a No. 5 national ranking as proof of the program's return to prominence.

In addition, the Bruins have paired committed and non-committed recruits during campus visits, hoping those already on board will influence their undecided peers.

Mission Viejo offensive tackle Blake Worley and Agoura quarterback Ryan McCann, who have committed, make their official visits this weekend. So do coveted cov·et

UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX
freshman Kenyon Coleman, Fletcher would have been a major national recruit if not for injuries his junior season.

Expected on campus next weekend are two San Diego players, defensive tackle Ken Kocher and linebacker Robert Thomas, who are considered the best at their positions in the state; Tustin's DeShaun Foster, a Fargas-level tailback; and Tucson, Ariz., offensive tackle Mike Saffer, perhaps the best in the west. His father, Don, played for John Wooden in the late '60s.

The Bruins' fourth (and final) recruiting weekend begins Jan. 9. After UCLA spends a week in Dallas for the Cotton Bowl, the Texas recruits come to town.

Stay tuned.
