UCLA NOTEBOOK: PUNT COVERAGE TOP PLIGHT.

Byline: Brian Dohn Staff Writer

UCLA junior receiver Craig Bragg said Monday he would play on the punt punt - (From the punch line of an old joke referring to American football: "Drop back 15 yards and punt!") 1. To give up, typically without any intention of retrying. "Let's punt the movie tonight." "I was going to hack all night to get this feature in, but I decided to punt" may mean that you've decided not to stay up all night, and may also mean you're not ever even going to put in the feature.

2.
-coverage team if necessary this weekend against San Diego State.

The offer comes in response to an awful effort at Oklahoma, in which Antonio Perkins returned three punts for touchdowns, and underscores the plight of the Bruins punt-coverage team.

UCLA's coaching staff met the past two days to discuss changes on the unit, in personnel and schemes.

``It could be starters, it could be backups from other areas,'' Dorrell said. ``There's a lot we can change. Some of it was from a scheme standpoint, and some of it was obviously we didn't do the execution that we had done the previous two weeks.''

The failed execution was mostly punter
Punter
1. An trader who hopes to make quick profits. Basically, another term for speculator.

2. In the U.K., it is generally used to describe someone who gambles. It is also used to mean a client or customer of any business.

Notes:
A punter speculates as opposed to invest. Thus, punters aren't concerned with the fundamentals of an investment, but rather attempt to make a quick profit by selling to somebody else at a higher price.
Chris Kluwe not punting in the intended spot.

``There are just small critical errors,'' Dorrell said. ``When you're coached to do a particular scheme and the ball doesn't go in the direction it's supposed to go, it's hard to cover the rest of the field. Those are the things we need to fix from a coaching standpoint, and we'll get those things fixed this week.''

However, Dorrell said he wouldn't change punters, especially given Kluwe's powerful leg, and his ability to kick directionally well in the first two games.

San Diego State's Kyle Conerly is averaging 8.8 yards on 11 punt returns.

--Tight end talk: With Marcedes Lewis (shoulder) and Blane Kezirian (ankle) doubtful against the Aztecs, Dorrell said freshman J.J. Hair could get the bulk of playing time. The coaching staff also is contemplating using a player from another position for the slot, including backup offensive lineman Shane Lehmann, who played some tight end against Oklahoma.

--Court case: Backup quarterback John Sciarra's arraignment was continued until Oct. 30, according to Susan Schroeder, a spokeswoman for the Orange County District Attorney's office. Sciarra was charged last month in Newport Beach with public intoxication and providing false information, both misdemeanors.

--Extra points: San Diego State quarterback Adam Hall, who was injured in the season opener, won't play against the Bruins. Backup Matt Dlugolecki, who has completed 72 of 125 for 700 yards, will start. ... With fullback Pat Norton out with an ankle injury, it could mean more time for Manuel White at fullback instead of tailback. Also, Dorrell said freshman Maurice Drew, who had five carries for 41 yards against the Sooners, may have earned more carries against San Diego State. ... Dorrell said injured starting quarterback Matt Moore will be more active in practice this week but won't play against the Aztecs. The Bruins remain hopeful Moore will return from the bone bruise to his left tibia

, suffered Oct. 4 against Washington. ... Game time against Washington (Oct. 4) will be 3:30 p.m. and broadcast on Fox Sports Net.
