UCLA NOTEBOOK: MANY POSSIBILITIES IN BOWL SCENARIOS.Byline: Brian Dohn Staff Writer Even after losing its past two games, UCLA technically is alive for the Pacific-10 Conference championship. But the possibility also exists the Bruins (6-4, 4-2 Pac-10) could get shut out of a bowl if they lose their last two games. Most of the bowl situations will be known after the games Nov. 22, but the most likely scenario for UCLA appears to be either the Sun Bowl (Dec. 31, El Paso, Texas), the Insight Bowl (Dec. 26, Phoenix) or the Las Vegas Bowl (Dec. 24). USC's possible inclusion in the Sugar Bowl clouds the issue. If the Trojans and Washington State finish tied for first in the conference, but USC potentially heading to the national-championship game, the Cougars could wind up in the Rose Bowl or bypassed to the Holiday Bowl, usually reserved for second-place teams. The third-place team goes to the Sun Bowl, fourth place to the Insight Bowl, fifth place to Las Vegas and sixth place to the Silicon Valley Bowl (Dec. 30, San Jose). If UCLA, which is in third place, beats Oregon at the Rose Bowl on Saturday, it will ensure the Bruins of at least finishing in a tie for fourth place, and at least a tie for third is likely, even with a loss the following week at USC. If UCLA loses its remaining two games and finishes 6-6, any Pac-10 team that finishes with a record better than .500 overall, even if that team was below UCLA in the conference standings, would go to a conference-affiliated bowl ahead of the Bruins. --Mociler back starting: Junior Paul Mociler appears to have regained his starting right-guard position, but freshman Kevin Brown will continue to see action there as well. Mociler started against the Cougars while Brown, a converted defensive lineman, backed up, and UCLA coach Karl Dorrell said the same scenario likely will play out against Oregon. ``Kevin has done a nice job picking up what we're doing offensively,'' Dorrell said. --Extra points: UCLA defensive tackle Rodney Leisle (ankle) was in on two plays against the Cougars, but he should be able to play more this weekend. ... Though receiver Junior Taylor missed most of the game against Washington State with a hip pointer, Dorrell said he expected Taylor to be ready against the Ducks. ... Safety Jarrad Page is bothered by a sprained knee, but according to Dorrell, Page's status is ``likely, but we'll have to see how he practices.'' ... Bruins senior defensive end Dave Ball continues to lead the nation with 13.5 sacks. ... Kickoff for the game Nov. 22 at USC will be 12:30 p.m. The game will be televised on Channel 7. |
