UCLA officials disclosed Lehmann's arrest and no-contest plea to a misdemeanor battery charge Tuesday. Lehmann was unavailable for comment Tuesday and declined to comment at Wednesday's practice on the advice of his attorney, according to UCLA officials.

The altercation with Estrada occurred outside of Madison's Neighborhood Grill after Estrada tried to leave the bar with five cups. Lehmann, 21, was a security guard for the bar and became involved at the end of the altercation.

Estrada argued with a restaurant manager and doorman over the cups. According to documents, a physical altercation between Estrada and the manager occurred, in which Estrada's head hit the concrete, and he was dragged across the street, according to a witness. Estrada also threw a punch.

Richard Martinez, a witness, testified in a preliminary hearing that ``out of the blue, Shane (Lehmann) comes out and just coldcocks him. He was unconscious instantly.''

In the hearing, Estrada testified he had a skull fracture skull fracture,
n a rupture or break in the cranial bones.

Here, assault must be differentiated from battery as they are often confused. Assault is threatening to use force. . But Lehmann pleaded no contest to the lesser charge of misdemeanor battery.

Lehmann must pay Estrada by Oct. 29. He also was given 30 hours of community service and three years' informal probation.

UCLA coach Bob Toledo suspended Lehmann for Saturday's game against Colorado State, which is a team policy.

``I didn't get a chance to see him last year because he redshirted, and all of a sudden I see him on TV and said this guy is the real deal,'' Toledo said. ``I'm impressed with him. It's going to be a chore for us to tackle him.''

``I hadn't heard of (Sapp), but I know about him now,'' UCLA linebacker Marcus Reese said. ``He breaks a lot of tackles. Van Pelt does, too. He's a slippery quarterback. He's pretty much the same as Sapp.''

On one of Sapp's two touchdown runs against Colorado, Sapp dragged three defenders into the end zone. He rushed for 178 yards against Virginia and scored two touchdowns in each of the first two games. Sapp averages 5.49 yards per carry.

``He's a big trucker,'' lineman David Ball said. ``We just have to do our responsibilities and tackle him. Make sure we get a lot of guys swarming around this big diesel.''
