UCLA NOTEBOOK: HOLLINS LOSES STARTING ROLE.

Byline: Brian Dohn Staff Writer

After watching UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

play its best man-to-man defense Man to man defense is a type of defensive tactic used in basketball and Football (Soccer) in which each player is assigned to defend and follow the movements of a single player on offense. Often, a player guards his counterpart (e.g.  and score more easily Saturday, coach Ben Howland Ben Howland (born May 28, 1957 in Lebanon, Oregon) is an American college head coach of men's basketball.

He has been the head coach of the University of California, Los Angeles since 2003, and recently signed a contract extension through 2013.
said power forward Ryan Hollins Ryan Hollins (born October 10, 1984) is an American professional basketball player. At 7 foot, 225 lbs, he is a center from the University of California, Los Angeles. He was selected in the second round of the 2006 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Bobcats.  has lost his starting job so the Bruins can utilize a smaller lineup.

Dijon Thompson Dijon Lynn Thompson (born February 23, 1983 in Los Angeles, California, USA) is an American professional basketball player for Alba Berlin of the German Bundesliga. , normally UCLA's small forward, will start at power forward Tuesday at Michigan State with center Michael Fey and freshmen Jordan Farmar Jordan Robert Farmar (born November 30, 1986) is an American professional basketball player at starting point guard for the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers.

He was previously the starting point guard for the UCLA men's basketball team.
, Arron Afflalo Arron Agustin Afflalo (born October 15, 1985) is an American professional basketball player, currently with the Detroit Pistons. He recently completed a three-year career at University of California, Los Angeles in the Pacific Ten Conference of the NCAA as the starting shooting  and Josh Shipp Josh Shipp (born 23 January in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma) is an American motivational speaker and author focusing on youth and college-aged audiences. He is noted as being one of the youngest speakers ever accepted into the National Speakers Association. .

``I plan to go that way until you hear otherwise the rest of the year, with the three freshmen in the backcourt, Dijon at the four and Fey inside,'' Howland said. ``Hollins will still play a significant role coming off the bench.''

Thompson, who split time between small forward and power forward in UCLA's 81-79 win against Michigan, scored a career-high 29 points and added 10 rebounds in 28 minutes.

Hollins, who hasn't been productive in moving from center to power forward this season, is averaging just 3.3 rebounds per game. He had nine points and two rebounds in 17 minutes against the Wolverines.

Moving Thompson, who is 6-foot-7 but just 208 pounds, to the power forward spot could cause defensive problems if he plays extended minutes there. But should create offensive mismatches in UCLA's favor when bigger, slower players try to guard him.

Thompson said he began preparing for the role change last week and started studying more film.

``I just have to learn that position and learn spots on the floor where I can thrive,'' Thompson said. ``It's a really different position for me. It's a big responsibility, especially in coach Howland's system. You got to know how to set picks, know how to guard the bigs. I've just been watching film on how to play that role and it's just been paying off.''

--Goodrich's ceremony: Former UCLA great Gail Goodrich had his No. 25 retired at halftime, and not surprisingly, legendary Bruins coach John Wooden used his wit to delight the crowd and a contingent of former players that included, Walt Hazzard, Bill Walton, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Keith Erickson.

``(Goodrich) has his high school number retired, he has his professional number retired,'' Wooden said. ``It's about time It's About Time may refer to:

Television
  • It's About Time (TV series), a 1966 American television show.
Theater
  • It's About Time (musical), a 1951 Broadway production.
he has his college number retired.''

Bruins sophomore forward Matt McKinney, with the blessing of Goodrich, will wear No. 25 for the rest of his career.

--Majerus reaction: The news Utah coach Rick Majerus is resigning a few days after being introduced as USC's new coach shocked Howland.

``That's stunning to me because I know, just from listening, how excited he was to come back,'' he said in the postgame news conference. ``I'm sorry to hear that, for Rick's sake, because I really, really respect and love Rick.''

--Odds and ends: UCLA sported throwback uniforms, which have ``Bruins'' across the chest instead of ``UCLA,'' to commemorate the retirement of Goodrich's jersey. ... UCLA's game Dec. 31 at Oregon State was changed to a 3 p.m. tip-off. ... Brian Morrison went 1 of 5 from the field and is 5 for his last 31.
