UCLA NOTEBOOK: BAD VIEW IN WESTWOOD.

Byline: Jon Wilner Daily News Staff Writer

They'll see it from Tustin to Bakersfield, west to Camarillo and east to Hemet. But in and around UCLA's home base, Wednesday's city-series clash with USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  will not be televised.

Fox Sports West 2 has broadcast rights for the 7:30 p.m. tipoff from Pauley Pavilion Edwin W. Pauley Pavilion, informally and commonly known as Pauley Pavilion, is an indoor arena located on the campus of UCLA in Los Angeles, California. It is home to the UCLA Bruins men's and women's basketball teams. The men's and women's volleyball teams also play here. .  sports information director Marc Dellins said. ``Our core fans cannot see the game.''

Nor will they see UCLA play Washington State (Jan. 29), the USC rematch (Feb. 18), or Arizona State (March 5). Those games are also scheduled for FSW2.

The Bruins are helpless. They signed a contract with Prime Ticket five years ago. When Fox absorbed Prime, it inherited UCLA's contract, and Fox Sports West is readily available in Southern California. No problem there.

Then FSW2 was created to provide a secondary outlet for event coverage. Century has resisted carrying FSW2, so if you live on the Westside or the South Bay, Wednesday's game is just a road trip away.

What of McCoy? A comment by coach Steve Lavin has called Jelani McCoy's status with the Bruins into question.

When asked Saturday if McCoy has been held out of the starting lineup for disciplinary reasons - or if his status with the team has changed - Lavin said: ``No, no, no. Everything's status quo [Latin, The existing state of things at any given date.] Status quo ante bellum means the state of things before the war. The status quo to be preserved by a preliminary injunction is the last actual, peaceable, uncontested status which preceded the pending controversy. . Right now, he's on our team.''

Right now?

McCoy practiced Monday. But when asked if he will play against USC, McCoy shrugged his shoulders and pointed towards the locker room as if to say, ``It's in their hands.''

McCoy has already served a 10-week suspension for violating team policy and athletic department rules. He and Kris Johnson reportedly failed the school's drug test.

Recruiting update: The UCLA football team received its 20th oral commitment of the recruiting season Monday, when Denver safety Lovell Houston told Student Sports Magazine he'll sign a letter of intent with the Bruins.

Houston is considered one of the top five defensive backs in the nation - and the No. 1 free safety, according to the National Recruiting Adviser.

He joins San Diego linebacker Robert Thomas as UCLA's most significant national recruits. Houston turned down offers from Washington, Florida State, North Carolina North Carolina, state in the SE United States.
