UCLA NOTEBOOK: JOHNSON INJURED IN INCIDENT.

Byline: Brian Dohn Staff Writer

UCLA men's basketball player Josiah Johnson was allegedly hit in the face with a beer mug in a Westwood parking lot by a University of Arizona football player earlier this week.

Wildcats defensive tackle Brad Brittain, who is from San Diego, was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, according to the Los Angeles city attorney' office.

Johnson, who will be a senior power forward next season, was not arrested and does not face criminal charges, city attorney's office spokesman Frank Mateljan said. Johnson, who averaged 1.4 points in 20 games last season, met with UCLA coach Ben Howland on Tuesday.

``Josiah was very forthcoming about the details of this incident,'' Howland said. ``My players know it's inappropriate to be out late on a school night. Adhering to that policy could have avoided this incident. Fortunately, Josiah was not the aggressor, nor was he at fault.''

After the incident, Johnson went to UCLA Medical Center and needed stitches to close the gash on his cheek. Johnson won't face disciplinary action from the school.

--Padgett to visit: David Padgett, who announced last month he would transfer from Kansas, will begin an official visit to UCLA on Monday.

--Charity stripe:Don Costner, a 6-foot-9 power forward from Seton Hall Prep in East Orange, N.J., began an official visit Friday. ... UCLA finalized its nonconference schedule by adding a game against UC Irvine.
