UCLA NOT SURE ON WAY TO SAN JOSE.

Byline: - Brian Dohn

UCLA's invitation to the Silicon Valley Football Classic The Silicon Valley Football Classic, sometimes referred to simply as the Silicon Valley Bowl or Silicon Valley Classic, was an NCAA-certified Division I-A post-season college football bowl game that was played at Spartan Stadium on the South Campus of San José State  on Dec. 30 could be determined by whether the Western Athletic Conference The Western Athletic Conference (commonly referred to as the WAC, pronounced "wack") was formed on July 27, 1962, making it the sixth oldest of the 11 college athletic conferences currently participating in the NCAA's Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS; formerly  can find a place other than San Jose for Tulsa to play.

According to several officials familiar with the process, the WAC's desired matchup remains UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

against Fresno State. However, there is a growing sentiment that if the Silicon Valley bowl game is forced to invite Tulsa, or if it appears that might be the case, the bowl might opt for Washington because the Huskies are promising more fans.

C. Jay Key, Silicon Valley executive director, said he will make his presentations to the bowl selection committee today and is hopeful a decision will be announced Wednesday.

The four teams involved are UCLA (6-6) and Washington (6-6) from the Pacific-10 Conference, Fresno State and Tulsa.

``I've got four sets of recommendations,'' Key said. ``We have a television partner (ESPN ESPN Entertainment and Sports Programming Network ), and I think they play in there, too.''

The WAC WAC (Women's Army Corps), U.S. army organization created (1942) during World War II to enlist women as auxiliaries for noncombatant duty in the U.S. army. Before 1943 it was known as the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC). Its first director was Oveta Culp Hobby.  is trying to place either Tulsa or Boise State in the Fort Worth Bowl, which would allow a fourth team from the conference to play the game at San Jose State's Spartan Stadium.

WAC commissioner Karl Benson said he was hopeful of having ``a plan, but with an asterisk'' by Wednesday afternoon. The asterisk could be sending Boise State to the Fort Worth Bowl on Dec. 23 to play TCU, providing Boise State beats Hawaii on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Pac-10 settled its bowl picture Monday. Washington State will play in the Holiday Bowl in San Diego; Oregon will go to the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas; Cal will face Virginia Tech in the Insight Bowl in Phoenix; and Oregon State and New Mexico will meet in the Las Vegas Bowl The Las Vegas Bowl is an NCAA-sanctioned Division I-A post-season college football bowl game that has been played annually at 40,000-seat Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada since 1992. .
