UCLA NAMES STREET FOR CHANCELLOR YOUNG.

 has renamed one of the campus's main streets, Circle Drive, after Chancellor Emeritus Charles E. Young Dr. Charles E. "Chuck" Young is currently Chancellor Emeritus and Professor at the UCLA School of Public Affairs. Under his skillful leadership and guidance, UCLA went from a regional college with an operating budget of $170 million to became a world class institution with expenses , who headed the university from 1968 until his retirement in June 1997.

In a brief ceremony earlier this month on campus attended by colleagues and students, Chancellor Albert Carnesale Albert (Al) Carnesale (born July 2, 1936) is an American academic, formerly chancellor of the University of California, Los Angeles and provost of Harvard University. He has been involved in international diplomacy related to nuclear non-proliferation.  unveiled a sign that changed Circle Drive to Charles E. Young Drive - East.

``To have spent most of my life on Circle Drive and now to have it named for me is a great honor,'' Young said. ``It's the perfect symbol of my love affair with UCLA.''

Young spent nearly 30 years at the helm of the state's largest university. He retired as the longest-serving chief executive at any major American university American University, at Washington, D.C.; United Methodist; founded by Bishop J. F. Hurst, chartered 1893, opened in 1914. It was at first a graduate school; an undergraduate college was opened in 1925. Programs provide for student research at many government institutions. , and his signature is on two-thirds of the diplomas UCLA has awarded since its founding in 1919.

As chancellor emeritus, Young is active in UCLA's international activities and fund raising.

His retirement was prompted in part by his desire to look after his wife of 47 years, Sue, who is battling cancer. The Youngs live in Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  and have two children and seven grandchildren.

As of Tuesday, 22 brown-and-white markers bearing the name ``Charles E. Young Drive - East'' were placed at various points along the winding road Winding Road is a digital automotive magazine owned by Absolute Multimedia, Inc., of Austin, Texas, which also publishes 'The Absolute Sound' and 'The Perfect Vision.'. It focuses on enthusiast-oriented vehicles along with news covering industry buzz, upcoming events, and more.  that runs along the inside perimeter of the 381-acre main campus.

``This is one of the ways in which UCLA is showing its appreciation to Chuck Young for all that he has done for this campus,'' Carnesale said. ``In light of his sweeping impact on the university, it is highly appropriate that we honor him by giving his name to the street that connects every part of UCLA.''

Young was a powerful force in UCLA's ascent into the ranks of the nation's most comprehensive and respected universities. He championed high academic standards and affirmative action affirmative action, in the United States, programs to overcome the effects of past societal discrimination by allocating jobs and resources to members of specific groups, such as minorities and women.  and built up UCLA's athletic programs.

Before he became chancellor at the age of 36, Young held a variety of executive posts at UCLA and taught political science in the 1950s.
