UCLA HEARTBREAK; NATIONAL TITLE HOPES FIZZLE IN MIAMI, 49-45 : BRUINS PROBABLY MUST SETTLE FOR ROSE BOWL.

Byline: Jon Wilner Daily News Staff Writer

Scribbled in a corner of the chalkboard in UCLA's locker room was a brief inscription: ``11-0: Fiesta Bowl The Fiesta Bowl, now sponsored by Tostitos tortilla chips (a Frito-Lay product), is a United States college football game played annually since 1971. Originally, the game was hosted in Tempe, Arizona at Sun Devil Stadium where it remained until 2006.  Bound.''

Probably not.

Before Bruins offensive tackle Kris Farris took a wet towel to the chalkboard, Miami seemingly took a sledgehammer See Opteron.  to UCLA's Fiesta Bowl and national championship dreams with a 49-45 victory Saturday afternoon at the Orange Bowl.

As Pacific-10 Conference champions, the Bruins likely will play Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1 - a rematch of the 1994 game, won by Wisconsin 21-16.

coach Bob Toledo said. ``I'm sorry for the team and I'm sorry for the seniors. You only get so many opportunities to play in the Fiesta Bowl. But we're very proud to represent the Pac-10 in the Rose Bowl.''

The Bruins (10-1) were ranked No. 2 in the Bowl Championship Series poll entering Saturday, behind Tennessee and ahead of Kansas State. Shortly after UCLA fell, Kansas State's undefeated season ended with a double-overtime loss to Texas A&M in the Big 12 Conference championship game.

As a result, Tennessee (12-0) probably will play Florida State in the Fiesta Bowl. , will meet in the Fiesta Bowl in Tempe, Ariz., on Jan. 4.

However, ABC, which owns the rights to the BCS, reported Saturday night that UCLA has a slim chance to retain its No. 2 ranking in the BCS poll. The Bruins' strength of schedule may be enough to fend off Florida State, the network said.

The BCS rankings combine top-25 polls, computer polls and a strength-of-schedule quotient.

``It's been an incredible Championship Saturday,'' said Tennessee coach Phil Fulmer, whose team defeated Mississippi State 24-14 in the Southeastern Conference title game.

The Volunteers won with defense - something the Bruins had in short supply. Miami gained 689 yards, a record for a UCLA opponent. The Bruins were so bad that they had just 10 players on the field for one Miami touchdown.

``It's tough on us,'' defensive end Travor Turner said. ``Students were coming up to me saying: I've got tickets for the Fiesta Bowl. Don't disappoint us.''

If not for the newly created Bowl Championship Series - designed to match the Nos. 1 and 2 teams - the Bruins would have been Rose Bowl-bound all along.

``Up to this year, that was the best we could do,'' guard Andy Meyers said. ``We were 5-6 (in 1996) and then 10-2 (last year), and now 10-1. Rome wasn't built in a day "Rome Wasn't Built in a Day" is a single by Morcheeba released in 2000. Song information
