Film Award) cinematographer Christopher Doyle, "The Days of Being Doyle," at UCLA's James Bridges Theater (formerly Melnitz Theater), Nov. 14-24. Australian-born but Hong Kong-based Doyle has been credited as defining the look of contemporary Asian cinema. His development as a cinematographer certainly has coincided with the new work of Asian directors such as Hong Kong's Wong Kar-Wai ("Chungking Express") and Stanley Kwan ("Red Rose White Rose") and Taiwan's Edward Yang ("Mahjong") and Stan Lai ("The Red Lotus Society"). A self-taught cameraman, Doyle's signature is a limber, handheld camera with compositions and saturated, sometimes abstract color. Perhaps for this reason, director Gus Van Sant SANT South African Native Trust chose to use Doyle as a cinematographer on his remake of "Psycho," which is due for an early- December 1998 release. Doyle will attend the opening night on Nov. 14, with Van Sant moderating the discussion. "The Days of Being Doyle" is not a full retrospective. The archive has chosen not to include Doyle's best-known works, such as "Chungking Express" and "Fallen Angels," because the films have been screened either too recently or repeatedly at UCLA. However, the retrospective will include Doyle's rarely seen commercials and shorts as well as excerpts from the documentary on the remake of the forthcoming "Psycho." The film retrospective is presented in association with Doyle's first American photographic exhibition, which is to open also on Nov. 14 at three major Los Angeles photographic galleries: "Christopher Doyle: Image Wrangler wran·gler n. 1. One who wrangles or quarrels. 2. A cowboy or cowgirl, especially one who tends saddle horses. Noun 1. " was organized by the Los Angeles Center for Photographic Studies (LACPS) and includes Track 16 Gallery and Still/Moving at New Alchemy Gallery. The photographic exhibitions will run through early January in all three galleries, after which it will tour North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.
