All screenings take place at the James Bridges Theater, located on the northeast corner of UCLA's campus (nearest cross streets are Sunset Boulevard Sunset Boulevard is a street in the western part of Los Angeles County, California, that stretches from Figueroa Street in downtown Los Angeles to the Pacific Coast Highway at the Pacific Ocean in the Pacific Palisades.  and Hilgard Avenue in Westwood).

Mastroianni began his formidable film acting career as an 11-year-old extra. When he died in 1996, he had starred in more than 170 films, many of them memorable examples of the last 40 years of international filmmaking, and some, cinematic masterpieces.

The quality of Mastroianni's talent might be hidden behind his natural ease and debonair deb·o·nair also deb·o·naire
adj.
1. Suave; urbane.

2. Affable; genial.

3. Carefree and gay; jaunty.
. His unencumbered casualness moved seamlessly between comedy and drama, sometimes within a few moving frames of the same film. It seemed Mastroianni was an actor meant for the cinema. In fact, he professed: "I prefer cinema to theater. I prefer it for its approximation and improvisations, for its confusion. There's everything in cinema!"

This retrospective takes its cue from Mastroianni's declaration. That he made it all seem so effortless has been perhaps why Mastroianni's equally formidable skills as an actor have been overlooked.

Visconti gave Mastroianni his start. The young actor trained in Visconti's theater troupe for 10 years before making his major film debut in the legendary director's "White Nights" (1957). Mastroianni, who is identified as working with Visconti and Fellini, performed in front of the camera for an array of Italian filmmakers, ranging in different film styles from Lizzani's neo-realism to Scale's humanism, Blasetti's popular comedies to Germi's and De Sica's sex farces. This retrospective highlights a sampling of Mastroianni's acting legacy as well as appearances in the international films of Boorman and Mikhalkov.

Tickets for the film series are available one hour before showtime at the James Bridges Theater. Admission is $6 general and $4 for students and seniors. List this number for further public information, 310/206-FILM or visit UCLA's Web site at www.cinema.ucla.edu.
