left knee is still on the mend, but his health was good enough to get him through a week of practice and to be declared UCLA's fit and capable backup quarterback today against Oregon State.

It harbors questions, which coach Karl Dorrell Karl Dorrell (born December 18, 1963 in Alameda, California) is the first black head coach in the history of the UCLA Bruins college football team, a position he took on December 18, 2002.  danced around this week, as to whether Olson will start next week at Arizona State. And it also could leave Patrick Cowan Patrick Edmund Cowan (born March 23, 1986 in Surrey, British Columbia) was the starting quarterback for the UCLA Bruins football team after starter Ben Olson was injured in the middle of the 2006 season. Cowan is a redshirt sophomore. , who is making is fifth consecutive start, looking over his shoulder.

``I'm approaching to play this week, and that's all I'm worried about,'' Cowan said. ``That's all I'm doing is preparing for (Oregon State), if Ben is here or if he wasn't here.''

Cowan is 0-4 and completing 50.7 percent of his passes as a starter, but the Bruins' offense is coming off its best showing in a month in last week's loss at California.

Although Cowan's completion percentage remained below-average against the Bears (he was 22 of 40, 55 percent), he threw for a career-high 329 yards. Cowan was done in by a pair of costly interceptions deep in Cal territory, giving him six interceptions against three touchdowns as a starter.

``I felt prepared, like I had for every other game, but things clicked for us offensively,'' Cowan said. ``I think the more I've played, the more little things I've picked up on the way. It's game experience, and I feel like it's helped me. The way this offense played last week, I feel we could have played that way every other week.''

However, Markey grabbed back the majority of his carries with last week's 136-yard rushing effort at Cal. Furthermore, he added 63 receiving yards, and now leads the Bruins in rushing (779 yards) and receptions (25).

``It showed I could play a complete game,'' Markey said. ``I always run hard, but I guess the only difference was, just like in practice, I focused more on the details.''
