UCLA FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK: NO PULLING RANK THIS TIME.

 direction under a first-year coach.

The circumstances are different as the teams prepare for Saturday's matchup at the Rose Bowl, but third-year UCLA coach Karl Dorrell Karl Dorrell (born December 18, 1963 in Alameda, California) is the first black head coach in the history of the UCLA Bruins college football team, a position he took on December 18, 2002.  still views the struggling Sooners, who are ranked No. 21, as a chance for the Bruins to take a significant step.

UCLA, which is a touchdown favorite, is 1-7 against ranked teams under Dorrell, and his biggest win was at Oregon last season, when the Ducks failed to qualify for a bowl.

``It's big for our program,'' Dorrell said. ``This is a game that is a measuring stick-type of game to see what we're all about, and our players are ready for the next step.''

UCLA is looking for its first 3-0 start since 2001, and its first win in four tries against the Sooners, who have outscored the Bruins 131-41.

However, this UCLA team has more speed and appears to be more talented offensively than the one that lost 59-24 in Norman, Okla., in 2003, and the Sooners are nowhere near as explosive. Oklahoma (1-1) scored a total of 41 points in its first two games against Texas Christian and Tulsa.

``I think this (UCLA) team is a lot different than the team we had two years ago, and we're excited about this opportunity,'' Dorrell said. ``It's an exciting moment. We're off to a good start, our team is playing well, the morale is good, we're playing hard.''

--Runnin' Sooners: Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops Robert A. "Bob" Stoops (born September 9, 1960 in Youngstown, Ohio) is the head coach of the University of Oklahoma football team. During the 2000 season, Stoops led the Sooners to an Orange Bowl victory and a National Championship.  made a quarterback change after the first week of the season, but Rhett Bomar's first start didn't go well. He completed 5 of 13 for 42 yards and two interceptions in the 16-point win against Tulsa, but struggled so badly the Sooners didn't attempt a pass in the second half.

It has put pressure on tailback Adrian Peterson Adrian Peterson may refer to:

``What's been missing (in the passing game) is about everything,'' Stoops said. ``Consistency ... and we've had guys open and not been able to get them the ball. We've had guys open and not had the time to get it to them, and had a breakdown (in blocking). We've had a drop or two. I think everybody's taken their turn in different ways of not being able to execute it.''

Stoops said Bomar will start against the Bruins.

--Grieving Drew: Despite the death of his grandfather, Maurice Jones Maurice Jones (alias Meurig Prysor) (1863-1957) was a priest and university educator.

Born June 21, 1863 at Trawsfynydd, Meirionnydd, he was educated at the local schools, and with scholarships, proceeded to Christ College, Brecon, and then Jesus College, Oxford,
 - who had a heart attack at the Rose Bowl during the second half of Saturday's win and later died - UCLA tailback Maurice Drew isn't expected to miss any practice time or the contest against the Sooners.

``Maurice's grandfather was his biggest fan,'' Dorrell said. ``He never missed a practice or a game in high school, and he's attended just about every game that Maurice had here at UCLA. He was a tremendous fan. I want you to know he's doing well, the family is doing well.''

Dorrell said the funeral likely would be next week. After Oklahoma, the Bruins have a bye.

--Ben's status: Ben Olson For the American soccer player, see .

Benjamen James Olson (born February 23, 1983 in Thousand Oaks, California) is a redshirt junior quarterback for the 2006 UCLA Bruins football team.
is listed as the backup quarterback to Drew Olson Drew Olson (born April 6, 1983 in San Francisco, California) is a former starting quarterback for the University of California, Los Angeles football team, where he broke many of UCLA's passing records.  this week, but Dorrell said it is too early to tell if the left-hander will be ready to play.

``(Ben) hasn't done anything,'' Dorrell said. ``He threw a little bit in pregame, which is encouraging, but we have to see what he can do during the week.''

--Odds and ends: Receiver Marcus Everett (shoulder) and defensive end Justin Hickman Justin Hickman (born July 20, 1985 in El Paso, Texas) is an American football defensive end with the Washington Redskins. He played collegiately at the University of California at Los Angeles.  (shoulder) are expected to play against the Sooners. ... Linebacker Wesley Walker (knee) and receiver Matt Slater (leg) are doubtful.
