junior safety Eric McNeal waited for the moment he could shoot past a blocker and take down Arizona State running back and close friend Loren Wade to make a big play.

McNeal held up his end, emerging from a crowded secondary to become a key reserve with 25 tackles. But Wade, a former teammate of McNeal's at Serra High of Gardena, is in an Arizona jail facing murder charges.

``Weird is not the word. That was something I thought would never happen,'' McNeal said. ``I couldn't even imagine he did something like that. That was a total shock to everybody that he knew. Everyone was stunned stun

Wade was arrested in March after allegedly shooting former ASU ASU Arizona State University (Tempe, AZ)

McNeal said he has not spoken to Wade since the incident, but added the mothers of the two have spoken. McNeal, who had a few minor discipline issues at UCLA, added that Wade's situation opened his eyes.

``I would write him, but he would have to write me first,'' McNeal said. ``The only thing to do now is pray for him.''
